Club Car delivered two portable vehicles to the Vatican specifically designed for Pope Leo XIV earlier this summer, according to The Augusta (Ga.) Chronicle.

The Catholic Church’s first American pontiff took delivery of the small-wheel, zero emissions cars engineered for airplane transport without having to be dismantled.

Garia, a subsidiary of Club Car, collaborated with Italian distributor Exelentia and the Gendarmerie Corps of Vatican City State, the security force, to design the cars. The portable vehicles will be used by the Pope and his security detail during international visits.

A Club Car official presented Pope Leo with the vehicles at Pontifical Villas in Castel Gandolfo in Rome.

“We are deeply honored to have provided our electric vehicles for His Holiness,” Club Car said in a release. “It’s a proud moment that reflects the commitment of the Club Car group to sustainable innovation and thoughtful design at the highest level.”

The vehicles arrived at the pope’s summer residence in Rome adorned with the “SCV 1” Vatican City State license plate typically designated for the “Popemobile”.

Denmark-based Garia was acquired by Club Car in 2022.

“Drawing on Garia’s manufacturing expertise and innovation, the cars were designed to ensure maximum efficiency, agility and security for Pope Leo,” the company said.

Club Car is a global manufacturer of golf cars, utility vehicles and personal transport and other low-speed vehicles. Founded in 1958, the company serves consumers as well as commercial customers, such as hotels and resorts, college campuses, airlines, theme parks and rental companies. Platinum Equity acquired Club Car from Ingersoll Rand in 2021.
